Information for starting a small business in New York State Once you get there select Choose a Business Type (found in the right hand column), search for the type of business, answer a few questions. You will be given a page of informational links that relate to the type of business you are either doing now or want to start up.

As a vendor at arts & crafts shows you are required to have a Certificate of Authority to Collect Sales Tax. You can apply for this certificate from the Department of Taxation and Finance.
